Jim Shooter once said that without The Star Wars comics Marvel would've gone out of business. I can't see how that is true.
That was absolutely true. The finances of newsstand comic book sales and the horrifying amount of waste and corruption was almost fatal in the 1970s before the Direct Market chain of comic book specialty stores evolved. It was only the overwhelming success of STAR WARS and the STAR WARS comics (which went through multiple printings, and were collected in a variety of different editions) that brought in substantial enough revenues to offset all of that.
I’m so glad I did my part by buying so many Star Wars comics in childhood.
